Like you, everyday I get dressed to go out and do something big! Or a least I put on a nice shirt with my sweat pants so I look decent during my Zoom meetings.
How ever you get dressed and ready for your day, it seems we often are focused on what we put on our outsides and not how we dress our "insides."
I believe our attitude comes across in every interaction of our day and how we dress our attitude is more important than our shirts, pants, socks, shoes or even how we do our hair and face.
I've always loved comedians and growing up I watched some movies with W. C. Fields. He was often portrayed as a mean, child-hating grump (he really wasn't). He aptly pointed out that, "Attitude is more important than the past, than education, than money, than circumstances, than what people do or say. It is more important than appearance, giftedness, or skill."
Attitude.
What if every day we put on kindness?
What if everyday we put on humility?
The stoic philosopher, Epictetus wrote, "It’s not what happens to you, but how you react to it that matters." Did you know he was born a slave? These days it seems we blame our circumstances much too often, essentially blaming others for our predicament. It has become the "soup du jour" to not take responsibility and all too often leaders find ways to blame others. These leaders tend not to lead through humility, but rather through pride.
What if every day we put on compassion?
What if every day we put on gentleness?
Finally, what if every day we put on patience?
John C. Maxwell, author and leadership guru, wrote, "Life is 10% what happens to me and 90% of how I react to it. " 90% of our interactions depend on patience and gentleness. Think about your day, yesterday, were 90% of your interactions filled with patience and gentleness?
How might your day and interactions with people be different considering how you "dress" yourself each day?
As you get ready each morning, grabbing your clothes, and building your outfit consider each piece of clothing being a reminder to dress yourself in these too. So which sock do you put on first?
